“To live fully, we must learn to use things and love people, and not love things and use people.” ― John Powell
Modern day America is driven by consumerism. What are the latest gadgets, what are the celebs wearing or using, what are the hottest fashion pieces, and how can I get my hands on those? These questions are what big corporations and businesses want consumers to be thinking about. We, the people, love our things more than we do people in some cases. We throw away perfectly good items when newer ones hit shelves. What if we chose not to do this?
Small businesses have been on the rise and according to Forbes contributing writer, Jason Nazar, "Over 50% of the working population (120 million individuals) works in a small business." and they have "generated over 65% of the net new jobs since 1995."
Brother Charlie's Thrift Store is just one of these small businesses that has helped individuals in the community get jobs. They work with the Brother Charlie's Rescue Shelter to help provide jobs to those living at the shelter.
You can help create more potential jobs for those aiming to rejoin society simply by shopping at thrift stores that work with organizations like Brother Charlie's or just by supporting small businesses around you.
Benjamin Thornburgh, Agreed! Plus many tend to donate it to places like Goodwill who really don't help anyone and make a profit on your donations. If you want to donate to a good cause we suggest finding places that help with shelters of any sort or give back in some way.
Definitely! I think college students especially are guilty of throwing away their "old" stuff as soon as they find replacements. It's easier to throw stuff away than to donate it, but it's a huge waste and a shame.
Dale Van Cantfort, Circle of Hope is just another example of a thrift shop that works with a shelter and helps the community. Can find some great things there! Glad to know others are big fans of thrift stores as well!
Thrift stores are a great way to save money, find unique buys and support good causes. Circle of Hope has one in Clarkesville and one in Cornelia!
